GreenGeeks Web Hosting Review
GreenGeeks was established in 2006 out of California, started by Trey Gardner a 13 year veteran in the web hosting industry. Gardner started the company after learning that the web hosting field was starting to become one of the largest polluters. Although GreenGeeks is committed to the green movement, they have not compromised their level of server hardware and performance. GreenGeeks has developed a strong reputation for providing both reliable hosting and top performance.
GreenGeeks offsets its pollution footprint by buying wind power credits. GreenGeeks will not just cover the carbon footprint of your website, but also buy three times the energy credits required. By using GreenGeeks your website will be leaving a positive footprint and help the environment.
Web Hosting Plans
GreenGeeks only runs Linux powered servers, so you will have to look elsewhere if you're looking for Windows servers to run you ASP or .NET software. At GreenGeeks you can choose from shared, VPS, dedicated and reseller hosting. Shared hosting costs $3.96 per month and they only have the one plan, but it includes unlimited bandwidth, storage and domains. VPS hosting starts at $39.95 per month, and you can choose between five different tiers of service. I won't list all of the different options as they are often updated; you just need to pick the level of service that your site requires.
Dedicated hosting starts at $169 per month, if you want to go this route your best option is to contact GreenGeeks directly and discuss options. They don't list the tiered prices on their website and will most likely give you a specific rate based on your needs. Finally, reseller hosting is offered at $19.95 per month, there are five tiers of service offered based on the number of resold accounts.
Each service provided by GreenGeeks is competitively priced, and you will be hard pressed to find another company providing these services at this price and also leaving a positive environmental footprint.
Uptime & Support
GreenGeeks, like all other hosts, claim they have and guarantee 99.9% server uptime. Of course there is no way to substantiate this, other than testing out their hosting yourself. I didn't notice any down time during my testing, but this kind of testing needs to be done over years not days. I couldn't find anything in GreenGeeks terms of service about any kind of refund if they fail to keep this guarantee.
You can reach GreenGeeks' customer support through a live chat system and email. All support staff are based in north America, however there is no telephone support offered. GreenGeeks also has an extensive online knowledge base that you can search. There are plenty of video tutorials to show you how to setup and use your CPanel, WordPress, Drupal and more.
GreenGeeks has some other features that separate them from their competition. They continue their commitment to helping the world by donating to causes such as World Vision, a charity that brings clean drinking water to impoverished people in Africa. They also match 10% of any donations by their customers.
GreenGeeks will also give you a free domain name as long as you maintain an active hosting account with them. You can setup your online shop with GreenGeeks through Zen Cart and OS Commerce Shopping Cart software. Other useful software, such as WordPress and Joomla, can be installed through Softaculous and Fantastico management tools. GreenGeeks offers a free website builder to help you make changes quickly and you will receive free marketing credits when you first sign up.
